What is LED and its advantages

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state lighting components. Each individual LED consists of a semiconductor diode that emits light when a voltage is applied to it.

LEDs can be many times more energy-efficient than light bulbs, depending on the application. LED lighting can save up to 85 percent of the electricity used by incandescent bulbs and up to 50 percent of electricity used by fluorescents. The electronics industry has used LED technology for several decades as indicator lights for various electronic devices. In more recent years, LED technology has progressed to the point where it is viable for general lighting applications.

LED is a kind of cool light source. Most of the energy emitted from incandescent bulbs is converted to heat instead of light. That’s why you’ll burn yourself if you try to touch an incandescent bulb once it’s turned on. Since LEDs consume significant less energy, they don’t emit much heat. That’s why you typically won’t burn yourself if you try to touch an LED light once it’s turned on.

LEDs have no moving, fragile parts and can last for decades. LED lights are designed to last about 50 times longer than incandescent lamps, which means less maintenance and less waste.

LED is the most advanced and mature lighting technology in the market today. It promises long life, quality of light and substantial energy savings. Many factors determine these characteristics including the quality of the LED chip and assembled package, driver regulating power flow, thermal management, optic lens as well as the intended application.

Not all LED lighting is alike. There are significant differences in pricing and performance. Lifetime and lumen output can vary greatly so it is critical to purchase LEDs from a professional and reliable supplier who stands behind their products.

LEDs are free from toxic elements making them safer for humans and the environment. Additionally, LED uses significantly less energy to produce the same amount of light compared to traditional lighting technology. This results in reduction of mercury emissions.
